The "Boston Magazine" list was taken from a survey conducted by Best Doctors, a Boston based company founded in 1989 by two Harvard Medical School affiliated physicians. Each year, Best Doctors polls the medical profession, asking, " If you or a loved one needed a doctor in you specialty, who would you choose?" Only physicians identified by their peers in previous years as the "best doctors" receive the "Best Doctors in America" survey by which the new best doctors are chosen. As Best Doctors states, "Doctors have a unique “inside” perspective about who’s at the top of their profession, who’s up on the latest advances in their field, and therefore, where they personally would turn for state-of-the-art care when faced with a serious medical problem."
